Radio CG 2: The Covid-19 Impact – Why Kids Need Sports

There’s no question that COVID has put a damper on sports all over the country. You’ve probably seen or at least heard about how the major sporting leagues are handling the changes (and to be honest, things seem to shift on a daily basis). Something that gets left out of the chatter? Kids’ sports. Across the country (and around the world), millions an millions of children have had their beloved after-school sports ripped away. But kids need sports – what kind of impact is this going to have on them?

We aren’t just talking about high school and college kids who might miss the draft, by the way. Excelling at a particular game and winning trophies and maybe going on to great riches and fame is nice, and good on ya if you can pull it off – but those kids weren’t our focus.

For many kids, after-school sports are how they learn to interact and work with each other from a young age. It’s about losing a critical component that helps them grow into functioning human beings.

During the show, the discussion ranged from how we can keep kids’ sports running safely to what sports can even run at all. Baseball can probably still go on, but football and basketball pretty much depend on player contact – a no-no in the time of corona.

Other topics the guys hit on:

  • Whether online education is helpful or hurtful
  • Whether kids are learning at all
  • Is a lockdown worth it if it saves lives?
  • Alternatives to kneeling during the national anthem

The show also welcomed its first two callers – Ray and Adam, thank you for joining us!

We’ll be back next week with another topic that just needs a little common ground.
