Radio CG: Empty Seats in Empty Stadiums

Our next radio show will be Saturday the 8th, from 6-7 PM Pacific time, on 101.5 FM/720 AM (Las Vegas KDWN).

Sporting events seem hardcoded into American DNA. No matter who you are, or where you live, it’s likely you’ve rooted on one team or another during your lifetime. Maybe you just glance at the scores every morning. Maybe loving (or hating) the Yankees is as natural to you as breathing.

We don’t need to tell you that the current pandemic has changed the way we take in sports. Teams now play in empty stadiums. Sometimes the management pipes in the sound of cheering crowds. Mostly, they seem to play in silence.

We want to talk about that silence, and how the changes, delays, and outright cancellations (and let’s face it, potential further cancellations) have impacted a country already reeling from COVID-19. Sports have long been an escape valve and a source of joy in tough times; what does the sudden, dramatic change in how they operate mean to the millions who took solace in them?

We’re hoping for an interesting, wide-ranging conversation that covers the American love affair with sports, the kneeling phenomenon, and what sporting events might look like in the future. Feel free to call in and share your thoughts!
